The University of Leeds and the BBC have partnered to create a course exploring the changing faces of heroism during World War 1. Experts will guide students through the British, French and German views of heroism, discussing similarities and differences. Through art, literature, film and television, students will examine the portrayals of heroism before, during and after the war. They will also curate a mini exhibition, explore a war memorial and write a review of a representation of war. The emergence of alternative hero figures, including anti-war campaigners and vulnerable, shell shocked soldiers, will also be discussed. This course is part of a series designed in partnership with the BBC to commemorate the war, alongside other courses such as World War 1: Paris 1919 - A New World Order? (University of Glasgow), World War 1: Aviation Comes of Age (University of Birmingham) and World War 1: Trauma and Memory (The Open University).
