This course provides an introduction to two unit operations commonly used in the Pharmaceutical Industry: size reduction and size separation. Particle size of solid drugs and excipients has a significant effect on many of their properties, including rate of dissolution and powder flow characteristics. Size reduction is the process of reducing the average particle size of a solid material, and is often necessary prior to incorporation into a finished product. Size separation involves separating a mixture of particles into two or more portions using screening surfaces. Different commercial size separation methodologies and equipment exist, and the design of these is dependent on the final required particle size and the size of the commercial batch. This course also covers the various equipment employed for size reduction and size separation, as well as the sedimentation, sieving, elutriation, and cyclone methods. Together, size reduction and size separation are used to obtain powder with the desired particle size for acceptable flow and compressibility for downstream processing.
