This course is perfect for anyone looking to gain valuable skills in geotechnical numerical analysis. It is the first software-neutral e-learning course in this field and is aimed at novice users of the software in both academia and industry. Through 13 lectures structured in the normal sequence of setting up a geotechnical numerical model, from planning the analysis to reporting the results at the end, and 5 lectures on modelling structural elements, you will learn the decision-making process when setting up a geotechnical numerical model as well as how to add structural elements in soil-structure interaction problems appropriately. Videos with 3D graphics and a commentary by their tutor will help you understand the complex geometrical concepts. On completing this course, you will be able to prepare geotechnical numerical analyses more confidently and gain valuable skills in geotechnical numerical analysis.

This course provides an overview of the decision-making process when setting up a geotechnical numerical model, as well as how to add structural elements in soil-structure interaction problems. It is the first software-neutral e-learning course in this field and is aimed at novice users of the software in both academia and industry. The course is divided into two sections. The first section contains 13 lectures structured in the normal sequence of setting up a geotechnical numerical model, from planning the analysis to reporting the results at the end. The lectures cover topics such as rationalising the geometry, the 2D plane strain and axisymmetric assumptions, boundary conditions, mesh generation, input parameters, and validating the analysis results. The second section contains five lectures on modelling structural elements, including the different element types and modelling concrete and steel materials. All the lectures use videos with 3D graphics and a commentary by our tutor to illustrate many of the complex geometrical concepts. On completing this course, participants will be able to prepare geotechnical numerical analyses more confidently, avoiding many of the common errors of novice users. They will gain valuable skills in geotechnical numerical analysis – a method whose use in geotechnical design is growing rapidly.

Pros & Cons

Pros Cons

Perfect content and illustrations: Users appreciated the course for its well-structured and informative content. The illustrations were particularly praised for their clarity and effectiveness in explaining concepts.

  • pros

Clear explanations and guidance: Users found the explanations in the course to be clear and helpful. The course provided guidance on how to approach geotechnical analysis and think critically. Users also appreciated the comment sheets that contained important graphs and formulas.

  • cons

Narrator's speaking speed: Some users mentioned that the narrator's speaking speed was inconsistent. They felt that the narrator spoke too slowly at speed 1 and too fast at speed 1.25, which could make it difficult to follow along.

  • cons

Lack of advanced topics: While users generally liked the course, some expressed a desire for more advanced topics to be covered. They felt that the course provided only an overview of geotechnical analysis and wanted to see more in-depth content on advanced topics.
